In the mid-60s the William Morris Agency
booked Pat on the Playboy Club circuit. One of
the comics with whom she especially enjoyed
working was Pat Morita who did stand-up as "The Hip Nip." In New Orleans, the Mayor presented her with the Key to the City. The Boston Globe noted that "attractive singer Pat Ford is giving the bunnies competition; she sings excitingly of love - ala Lena Home and Peggy Lee."
The Playboy Clubs were followed by an
engagement headlining in the Flamingo
Lounge in Las Vegas opposite Harry James
and his Orchestra (featuring Buddy Rich). Ralph Pearl of the Las Vegas Sun reported, "Pat Ford who made her debut in the Flamingo Lounge the other night, came across with a crash that could be heard up and down the entire Strip. She has an enormous voice range and would be a natural for the big showroom." At the time, a new young comic named Bill Cosby was opening in the main show room for Rosemary Clooney.
Pat's greatest experience came when William Morris invited her to join Jimmy Durante in a tour of Vietnam Veteran Amputee Hospitals. She was thrilled and honored to be given such an opportunity.
Pat sang her heart out for those young men she said, and marveled at the heart of Jimmy Durante. "He brought love and laughter to them when they needed it most. I'm sure they'll never forget his loving gift to them. I know I never will." It was the highlight of a decade of performances. |
